Eligo Bioscience Awarded $5 Million in Non-Dilutive Funding from the French Government to Advance Breakthrough Genetic Medicine Platform for Immuno-Dermatology

• This funding is part of the call for proposals “Innovations in Biotherapies and Bioproduction”, coordinated by the Health Innovation Agency under France 2030, and operated on behalf of the French government by Bpifrance.

Paris, France – [April 29, 2025] – Eligo Bioscience, a biotechnology company pioneering the development of novel genetic medicines, today announced it has secured a $5 million grant as part of the call for proposals “Innovations in Biotherapies and Bioproduction,” coordinated by the Health Innovation Agency under the France 2030 strategy, and operated on behalf of the French government by Bpifrance. This funding will accelerate the advancement and scaling of Eligo’s proprietary topical gene delivery platform, designed to enable local production of therapeutic biologics directly by skin-resident bacteria.

This grant follows recent key milestones for Eligo, including the publication of groundbreaking research on its microbiome base-editing platform in Nature, securing multiple foundational patents covering in situ editing of the skin microbiome, and successfully expanding its Series B funding round to $35 million. This latest non-dilutive financial support significantly strengthens Eligo’s capacity to rapidly advance its clinical pipeline.

 

Scaling up and advancing towards the clinic

Building on the development of its first-generation CRISPR-based topical therapeutic targeting moderate to severe acne vulgaris, Eligo will now optimize and scale up the bioproduction process of its innovative gene delivery vector ahead of later-stage clinical trials. In this endeavor, Eligo is partnering with Biose Industries, a globally recognized CDMO specializing in microbial fermentation. Biose’s extensive GMP expertise in scaling complex microbial therapeutics will be instrumental in accelerating Eligo’s progress toward clinical validation.

Expansion to immuno-dermatology targets

This new funding will also enable the company to explore broader applications in inflammatory and immunological skin disorders with significant unmet medical needs. The skin microbiome naturally plays a central role in regulating immune responses, with bacteria residing within the hair follicle representing a particularly promising delivery target due to their close proximity to key immunological cells. 

Eligo’s innovative delivery approach of genetic payloads leverages the unique location of resident skin bacteria to develop novel approaches for inflammatory and immune-driven diseases based on the local expression of biologics by the skin microbiome.

✔ Est mis en œuvre collectivement : pensé et déployé en concertation avec les acteurs économiques, académiques, locaux et européens pour en déterminer les orientations stratégiques et les actions phares. Les porteurs de projets sont invités à déposer leur dossier via des procédures ouvertes, exigeantes et sélectives pour bénéficier de l’accompagnement de l’Etat.

✔ Est piloté par le Secrétariat général pour l’investissement pour le compte du Premier ministre et mis en œuvre par l’Agence de la transition écologique (ADEME), l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR), Bpifrance et la Banque des Territoires.
